This webinar is supported by HEART UK
Despite the scientific consensus for the causal role of LDL-cholesterol in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease [CVD], various channels of misinformation, including editorials in journals and social media, have sowed doubt in the mind of the public with regard to diet, blood cholesterol, and CVD. This has been facilitated by the rise in popularity of extreme low-carbohydrate or all-meat “Carnivore” diets, which expressly deny that saturated and animal fat, or high meat and low/zero fibre diets, pose any concern for cardiovascular health.
This webinar will briefly highlight the media communicating such messaging, draw attention to the specifics of claims being made by proponents of low-carb/animal-exclusive diets, and critically evaluate those claims by reference to relevant evidence for impact of diet on blood lipids, and relationships between diet and CVD risk.
What will I gain from this webinar?
- Identify the sources and understand the drivers of controversial claims about diet and CVD risk.
- Understand the key evidence supporting the causal role of LDL-C in CVD, and the influence of diet on blood cholesterol and CVD risk.
- Understand the strength of evidence for dietary recommendations to lower blood cholesterol and CVD risk.
