Software to measure food and nutrient intakes are becoming widely available for research and some wearable technologies could support aspects of intake assessment, such as estimating timing and duration of food intake episodes.
Technology-based dietary assessment tools can remove challenges of paper-based methods, yet the tools are only as good as the underlying food composition database. As the food supply changes over time, this must be updated to reflect new products and reformulation. New digital ecosystems are continually evolving with the potential to make tools more personalised.
During this webinar Professor Janet Cade will take a hard look at whether new approaches to measuring food intake can really ‘cut the mustard’, using myfood24 as an example.
Providing accurate information on intakes is important, but could we go further to help people meet nutrient targets? Professor Cade will then look at identifying gaps and consider future needs, particularly when looking to provide local relevant public health information and optimising sustainability measures.

myfood24 has been developed as a research grade diet monitoring tool. It has been validated using multiple-pass 24-h recalls and biomarkers. The food composition table has been enhanced, now including >120k branded UK foods compared to ~7k foods in our generic tables, with the user journey supported through a simple to use interface and onboarding support available.
Most recently, myfood24 Diet Optimisation Engineâ„¢ was launched in 2022. It is MHRA approved as a class 1 medical device. Diet is modelled for the individual, using linear programming to suggest minimum dietary changes to move closer to nutrition and sustainability targets.
