People in prison have a higher rate of physical and mental health conditions compared to the general population. The Eatwell guidelines are adopted in the prison setting, which is particularly important given that a  diet which does not meet these recommendations has also been linked to higher risk of poor physical and mental health, reduced cognitive function, lower educational outcomes, and reduced productivity. Prisoners are an example of such a vulnerable population. This webinar aims to assess if the nutritional needs of people in prison can be met by menu provision and food choice, and to try and understand if current recommendations are suitable for this vulnerable group.
What will I gain from this webinar?
- Gain an understanding of the UK Government nutritional recommendations for a healthy balanced diet as described the Eatwell Guide and its comparison with prison population menu analysis
- Gain insight on the Fibre, Vitamin D, and protein in prison population diet and its link with physical health, mental health, and behaviour outcomes
- Gain insight on The Berwyn pilot project and how a nutrition education programme can influence food choice
