Dr Greg Lessons

Dr Greg Lessons is a registered nutritionist who has a full time professional role with the Fire Fighters Charity as a leader in health improvement. This involves developing, implementing and evaluating educational resources and behavioural change interventions for the benefit of the UK fire service community. His unique academic and professional background have prepared Dr Lessons perfectly for this role, as his MSc and PhD research resulted in the first UK fire station-based nutrition interventions, the first dietary assessment tool validated for UK firefighters and the first firefighter body composition reference system.

Dr Lessons was awarded his PhD in April 2021, with Professor Janet Cade conducting the viva. Prior to this, he spent three years as the first full time nutritionist in any UK fire service (London Fire Brigade) before which, he served London as a full time firefighter of 17 years.

In addition to his academic and professional credentials, Greg was awarded the student prize for ‘best original communication’ at the Nutrition Society Winter Conference in 2017, where he presented his first abstract.

In 2019, Dr Lessons was named ‘Nutritionist of the year’ by the Caroline Walker Trust’. He then went on to win the Public Sector Catering ‘Health and Nutrition Award’ for his pioneering work in the delivery of a clear health and nutrition strategy in the London Fire Brigade.

Since February 2019, Dr Lessons has also been a part time associate lecturer at London Metropolitan University where he teaches various areas of Human Nutrition. In addition to his professional roles, Dr Lessons has served the Nutrition Society in a voluntary position on the Strategic Communications Committee since January 2020.
