Dr Neal is Professor of Medicine at UNSW Sydney, Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at Imperial College London, and Executive Director of the George Institute for Global Health, Australia. He has a medical degree (1990), a PhD (2000) and is a Fellow of the UK Royal College of Physicians, the American Heart Association and the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences. He has a long-standing interest and expertise in the field of sodium reduction and played a lead role in the Salt Substitute and Stroke Study. That trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed clear protection against stroke and premature death by making the switch from regular salt to potassium-enriched salt. The trial was central to the recent launch of a new World Health Organization guideline recommending a switch to lower-sodium salt substitutes.
