Obesity is defined as an excess of adiposity that impairs health. It extends beyond Body Mass Index (BMI) and the numbers on a scale, taking into account the impact that excess fat tissue can have on organ or tissue function. In this webinar, we will explore the genetic, biological, and environmental factors that contribute to obesity. We will examine the physiological mechanisms that regulate nutrition and energy balance, which both prevent weight loss and encourage weight regain over time. Additionally, we will address the issue of weight bias and stigma in society and healthcare, discussing the effects this has on individuals living with obesity. You will also receive guidance on how to address weight bias in clinical practice and initiate a non-judgmental, patient-centred conversation about obesity. Finally, we will review evidence-based approaches to managing obesity, including lifestyle interventions, medications, bariatric surgery, and the importance of long-term, multidisciplinary chronic disease management.
What will I gain from this webinar?
- You will learn why the traditional ‘Eat Less, Move More’ approach is overly simplistic and stigmatising, and explore more effective, evidence-based treatment options
- You will develop strategies to address weight bias and stigma in both healthcare settings and wider society
- You will review evidence-based management strategies, including lifestyle interventions, medications, and bariatric surgery
