Everyone can learn to be a leader. To do that we need to throw away the old model which relied upon a person becoming a leader because they had certain inherent traits – the ‘natural born leader’ syndrome – and instead focus on what effective leaders do, and then set about learning those skills. This webinar will introduce definitions and theories of leadership to help you identify what you have to do to be successful in any leadership situation. This approach is underpinned by understanding two key leadership models – ‘The Leadership Loop’ and the ‘3 Circles’. This webinar will demonstrate how critical your role as a leader is in simultaneously managing the needs of the individual in your team, your team, and your task, and must be led by an ethical-based approach to your setting a vision and strategy, underpinned by strong personal values. An introduction to the power of self-reflection in leadership and a goal setting model will also be provided, designed to help you develop those skills needed to succeed as a leader.

Mark Hollingsworth is the CEO of The Nutrition Society, a scientific learned society, based in London, United Kingdom, a position he has held since July 2014. A graduate of the Royal Air Force College Cranwell, Hollingsworth began his career by serving for 16 years in a variety of roles as a military officer in the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force, serving in Belize, Germany, Canada and the UK. Upon leaving the Royal Air Force Hollingsworth then developed extensive leadership experience in the non-profit sector, serving as a Director, Vice-President, Executive Director and Board Chair in Canada. This was followed by a two-year period as a visiting lecturer on Leadership at the University of Winnipeg in Canada, during which time he published two books on the basic skills of leadership. He returned to the United Kingdom in 2014 to take up his role as CEO of The Nutrition Society. Hollingsworth, in his capacity of CEO, also serves on the UK Parliamentary Scientific Advisory Committee, The Royal Society of Biology Strategic Partners Group and the UK Medical CEOs Group. He holds an MBA and is a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management. He was awarded CEO of The Year for life sciences in 2018 by CEO Today Magazine, the Global 100 CEO of the Year for Life Sciences in 2019, and has been named in 2021 as one of the Top 20 Most Dynamic CEOs in the United Kingdom by CEO Publications.
