Sports foods are promoted to athletes as convenient alternatives to everyday foods to fuel performance. However, due to the nature of their formulation, commercial sports foods are classified by the NOVA system as ultra-processed foods. Consumption of ultra-processed foods has been associated with mental and physical health risks, but little is known about athletes’ consumption and perceptions of ultra-processed sports foods.
This webinar will provide an introduction to ultra-processed foods and what is currently known about athletes’ sports food intake. It will outline the study methods and present the results, discussed in light of existing research. Finally, it will provide practical recommendations for those working with athletes.
What will I gain from this webinar?
- Gain an understanding of ultra-processed foods including their classification, association with human health, and relevance to athletes.
- Be able to describe athletes’ sports food practices and preferences including the factors influencing their choice of sports foods.
- Be able to critically consider strategies to support athletes to make informed choices regarding strategic use of ultra-processed sports foods or minimally processed alternatives.
